This page is dedicated to my diploma thesis entitled Group Authentication and Encryption in Distributed Environments I completed in June 2004 at the Institute of Theoretical Computer Science, University of Ulm, Germany.

Abstract. For groups of autonomous systems it is getting more and more important to be interconnected. Exchanging commands and environmental information is essential for exhibiting intelligent behavior.

The main considerations in this thesis are based on the requirements for groups of autonomously acting robots. Communication is handled via wireless communication networks conforming to the IEEE 802.11 wireless lan standards. These networks are inherently unreliable, especially when used in crowded rooms with many senders. Additionally, malicious adversaries and eavesdropping opponents should be kept out of the line if possible.

To address these problems, a fault-tolerant and security enhanced communication framework, notedly feasible for ad-hoc connectivity, is designed along with a reference implementation in C++. The whole framework is intended to offer a communication gateway for mobile autonomous systems in a transparent way.
